Hold It Just a Damn Minute!

A marathon? That is twenty six miles and some change. What am I thinking? I don't even like running. I barely completed my final run in boot camp. Sure I've done a few local 5k runs and a couple of sprint triathlons, but you could sum up my running ability in one word - suck!. I have tried it off and on for the past 10 years..at my best, my pace for the first mile was barely under ten minutes (followed by a 12 minute mile). I have a Garmin forerunner HRM -GPS to make a digital history of just how bad it really is. When I start a typical after work loop around lake Alice, (~2.5 miles), the first thing I do after I start is begin calculating in my head how long this misery will take. I then lean forward and watch my feet strike the ground for the next couple of miles. When I am done, I do have to admit that I feel pretty damn good after the fact. Some of the mental stresses of the day are gone as well - so perhaps this has a purpose.
Twenty six miles? Can I actually hold out that long? Well I have ample time to find out so lets try for a 4 to 5 mile run - slow (as if that was optional) and see how it goes. This is clearly a distance-endurance problem and not a speed problem.

Damn! I got some work to do. It doesn't help that the heat index was over 100, but that is pitiful.

You need to get a copy of the book "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougal. Helluva good read. It will put you in the mood.

OK - Will Do. Just what I need - Another book espousing the virtues of running penned by a gazelle.

  1. Heat index of 100. You are man! I am in Houston where it was 95 today. At 9pm I have to hold my breath between the rental car and the Holiday Inn lobby. The idea of running in this piss warm soup is thoroughly demoralizing.
